walleyeI was going to include this in my january roundup but decided to just make a separate post because it was gonna get big. Big big big post incoming. I did not write this as succinctly as i would have liked but bear with me lololol also yeah spoilers ahead etc
Background
Run 1: Blue Lions, Normal Casual
I’m really glad i asked jessica what house to play first and she recommended blions to me because i think storywise it is a good introduction to...everything! My children...
Recruited: Hilda (“you’re making me work” most iconic line), Lysithea, Dorothea (for the kim bora parallels), Shamir (i think she is so hot)
Dancer: Felix (following kaia and tori’s footsteps why is the dance SO STUPID u look like a fool felix)
Ingrid falcon knight literally so OP so was Hilda wyvern lord. My sylvains have always been kinda weak adadf i have him as dark knight but oh well. I think with stride gambit i didn’t have too many problems with moving dedue around either. I def had way more leveling differences here compared to my beagles run but oh well. I also ended up making annette a wyvern lord which took a lot of time to set up but worked out pretty well! I also like didnt expect ppl would DIE for some reason which is why in beagles i recruited way more ppl.
Run 2: Black Eagles, Hard Casual (still in progress but i’m almost done!)
Recruited: Lysithea, Sylvix (lol i’m aiming for their ending), Ashe (i couldnt bear him dying but i do not use him at all), Mercedes (for the Jeritza supports) (SOBS!!!!! I don’t really talk about them but their familial dynamic is def my fav) (Mercedes is like murder is okay if u have a good enough reason), Leonie (i don’t really use her...also she talks about jeralt way too much), Marianne (u wont be dying on me this time queen), Alois, Shamir, Hanneman, Manuela (idk why i recruited all these old ppl cuz they kinda suck LOL)
Dancer: Dorothea (i like kinda fucked up w leveling so i didn’t get her to master warlock so she only has 1 use of meteor instead of 2 but whatever its fine im not playing on maddening or whatever the fuck)
Who is good in this round...my caspar grappler->warmaster is not bad, i also have both edie and ferdie as wyvern lords which is sick. I’m trying byleth falcon knight and its like. Not the best but also not the worst? Petra assassin and felix mortal savante are quite fun tho. I used to use bernadetta a lot early on but i feel like she hasnt scaled well for me :__(
My children (round 2). Playing this i don’t know if i could do church route because going against edelgard now seems difficult for me personally <3 i do think if i met her in real life i would be like “do u hate me” because she just hated everything i said adjkladfj (me reloading saves to pick the other option with her like every time). also why does hard mode feel easier than normal am i just better.
I’m so obsessed with this game. I think me willingly playing multiple runs of a game is a sign i enjoy it because when would i ever have the patience/attention span to do that otherwise!
I also bought the dlc and have been alternating playing that with my beagles game, but i’m still not done yet. I find it harder, which i am enjoying, but omg. Why don’t some of the ashen wolves have supports with ashe/linhardt/etc. I know the Yuriashe shippers are particularly upset about this one! I also wish there was more flexibility with what classes you could play as, which characters you could have brought in, etc. though i suppose that is part of the challenge, and i do enjoy that! Overall i am liking it though hehe i wanna learn more about yuri and hapi!!
This is going to be blions/beagles heavy because I haven’t done church route/gdeer yet (maybe I will, but not any time in the foreseeable future i think. Claude does pique my interest...are the Almyrans supposed to be South/West Asian coded akdfjalksdfj) (ok i also do wanna learn more about the claude/hilda/lorenz trio.). also im not talking about any discourse cuz im sure theres a lot but \o/
Overall Commentary
I think for a game that does everything that it does..it’s quite good! It would technically belong on my 2021 games list but alas.
i think the central conflict is fairly interesting, too. i dont know what other fire emblem games are like but what really struck me is that we are sending Children to War. like we are normalizing children at war and it’s so weird to me even though i know historically people my age would be out there fighting (and like. Still are i guess.a dkjasdfl)! It’s weird to me not just bc i didnt think nobles actually fought but because byleth cannot spare every student on the battlefield! sure some make sense like hubert or dedue but i remember in my blue lions playthrough when i killed bernadetta and she just died...on that sad horrible field...and it does feel terrible! especially if you recruit from other houses and force them to kill their best friends (mercie and annette...;_;) like HOW COULD U LIVE WITH YOURSELF!!! anyways.
Liked:
- The characters are written much more in depth than I expected them to be. Many have reasons for being the way they are besides just character archetypes (sylvains backstory actually shocked me i thought he was ur typical philanderer), and in the support convos they actually work through their issues in some form or another. Five years is a lot and I think the game does try to make an effort to show how they grow over time. OBV this is not to say that all the support cutscenes are good/fleshed out enough because they are not but the fact that there’s so many conversations is cool.
- The voice acting was quite good. There were some voices that did irritate me a bit (constance adfsdf and also when bernadetta would get squealy sorry i love you bernie) but i was really impressed to see that basically everything was voice acted!
- Battles were fun! I was expecting to get bored with turn based combat (because i was so used to it being like, oh, just use your strongest move every time duh) but this had more elements to keep into account, and with the variety of classes it was a good time. I wish there were more types of maps though.
Disliked:
- The black eagles route definitely got shafted. I remember talking to tori about this and she said that blue lions got a jaw dropping wow moment that black eagles definitely did not get and she’s right! They didn’t get any cool cutscenes and all the rendered cutscenes were so awkwardly done at parts, it was clearly rushed. I wish they gave edelgard the effort she deserved because she is the most pivotal character in the game imo and her route is only 18 chapters as opposed to everyone’s 22! I also wish they took more time to explain her plans once she actually unified fodlan but i suppose thats the kind of thing to leave to fic lol.
- Late in the game, the “free days” felt overwhelmingly boring and kind of ruined the pace a bit. I still had some characters who i wanted to instruct and thus i still had to wine them and dine them, etc. i wish there were more options, post timeskip, to spend activity points on otherwise it feels like a waste. I also just wanted to battle...all the time towards the end, and i guess i could have kept on doing seminar the whole time but i did have a few stragglers that i wanted to catch up so...shrugs.
- Gender locked classes :\ let ashe be a falcon knight he literally deserves it. Also imagine edelgard warmaster...
- So no gay? So ur saying....we did all this shit..only for half of them not to be GAY?
- Idk whether this is a pro or a con but byleth’s boobies were distractingly big.
Overall, i still for sureeee recommend people play this game because it has put me in such a state, but for similar gameplay i’d definitely recommend Divinity Original Sin 2 because that is still the best turn-based combat game i’ve ever played! But ofc i will be looking forward to the next fire emblem game when it comes out <3.
Fav character dynamix
Let me talk about some character relationships i find very intriguing. They’re not ranked or anything they’re just in the order i remember to list them.
Romantic:
Ferdinand x Hubert (Ferdibert): I don’t know if these two are my favorite ship in the game but um. I am obsessed with Ferdinand’s Overbearing/I am Ferdinand von Aegir/That’s not very NOBLE of you and how he transforms into someone who is still overbearing but overall more thoughtful and always optimistic. And then we take Hubert, who I could not stand to look at until recently, and is the coldest person i can think of and its like. Yeah they’ll fix each other. I especially love it in relation to their dynamic with Edelgard, Both of them patronize Edelgard in different ways, with Ferdinand doing it right to her face and Hubert doing it moreso behind her back, but both of them are very sure of their ways but also can’t seem to orient their lives properly without Edelgard there in their lives as something to work towards. I think taking the Edelgard-Owned-My-Ass Club and having them be in a relationship is something that can be so profound...also as they recognize the ways that they are so devoted to Edelgard/the Cause, i think they can also become so devoted to each other as well. Like Ferdinand being the only one to get Hubert to blush (besides Byleth which doesnt count), their little tea vs coffee shtick, the list goes on! Also the “Two Jewels” label that’s kinda gay innit. Unrelated but I really love Ferdinand’s long hair and how he just never had time to cut it like im sure hubert loves that.
Caspar x Linhardt: okay like. we all know the deal with these two. linhardt is the funniest character in the game fr. i like to imagine these two in happy domestic life together and its so.....!!!! I read a fic before about them had they deserted after the battle at gronder field and it was so good...just unbelievably tender but i believe out of all the pairs to be able to cast away and set it out on their own, it would be these two!! . Also the contrast of caspar’s neverending himbo energy and linhardt’s untrying brilliance makes for a very amusing pair but caspar would never stop fighting for linhardt and linhardt’s favorite would always be caspar.
Dorothea x Petra: these two are just an above and beyond like “It is said that she became the person whom Petra loved the most” gay legalized in brigid...queen of brigid and devoted heart...i also think it’s interesting because both of them in rather “sensitive” situations of varying degrees of intensity (petra political hostage, dorothea a commoner amongst noble which is not as intense as the first but like LOL she def has her share of issues w/ fodlan nobility etc) and so both of them would have shared ground in that sense too. The revolutionary offshoot couple of the actual revolution.
Dimitri x Felix: i actually really do like the dimitri/byleth ending, but i do think dimileth is basically just Dimitri x Self-Insert. Which like, very fair. But i don’t really take byleth into account as a “character” because they either do what you tell them to do or every other part of their personality/history is kind of abstracted away? So they’re not strong enough to be an independent playable character like Zag from Hades or Harry from DE or something. Anyways. That’s why i don’t really consume byleth x ___ content. Even though the whole warm hands thing from their supports was so !!!! to me!!! (person with perpetually cold and often wet hands so can’t relate but i just like seeing dimitri happy <3)
What’s the term for a ship you like even though it’s unbelievably depressing and sad? This is it for me!
I remember reading this reddit post that’s like non-AM Felix ends up devolving into what he despised the most, someone without control, someone blindly following another’s path (in this case, Byleth/even Edelgard), someone much like his hated boar. And that strengthens the Dimilix relationship for me, because I think Felix has seen Glenn go down such a tragic path, and the next most probable candidate to suffer that route would be Dimitri. I think he has a “Why can’t you realize what you’re doing to yourself!” and thus it hurts even more because Felix has to have an aura of uncaring coolness about him, so he can’t outwardly confront Dimitri in a meaningful way. Felix cannot do well outside of AM because he is so unknowingly devoted to Dimitri and it ruins him! Or maybe he does recognize it, but wishes it wasn’t like that, because it reminds him of the ideals of knighthood that took his brother away from him. Felix has been witnessing an ongoing tragedy for a long time. Even if he has Sylvain/Ingrid/anyone on other routes, Dimitri is the necessary entity to make him feel like everything that happened was worth it.
Also helloooo Verdant Wind’s “Could I have saved him? Could I have stopped him?” u already know....
Sylvain x Felix x (Annette): Okay we all know that sylvix is good. Because childhood friend origins +reconciling after withholding ur feelings for so long is!!!! And i am a sylvix enjoyer. And i also love netteflix for how easy going and relaxing it it...the closest felix can ever come to puppy love. But ive also been thinking about nettesylvix polycule adfasdfsadf idk i like how annette levels them out even though she has issues of her own and i think all 3 have good/decent supports among themselves so it works. Also thinking of that aimlessknight comic about annette and sylvain being clean freaks while felix just dirties their place up. Everyone in this game has their share of parental issues but i think with blue lions its really about struggles against your family with ideas of knighthood and nobility and these three def have a lot of family issues and then some. I think each of them needs someone steady who will be there...and as they say...the equilateral triangle is the most structurally sound shape!
Dedue x Ashe: I’m sure many of you know how their supports killed me...it was the most emotionally charged out of all that I can recall (I don’t remember anyone else CRYING!!) and i’m glad kaia told me about them because they ARE PERFECT TO ME.
Ashe: (tearing up) Dedue... Your cooking is... delicious. It really is...
Dedue: Careful... or you will over-salt it.
Ashe: Ah, that’s all right. Thank you, Dedue...
Dedue: Eat as much as you’d like.
wwhwhahhH they’ve both gone through loss in some form or another and the fact that they’re both genuinely good and kind and sincere people! Also the food as care as a theme...ugh i love it so much im so happy their ending together is so beautiful and peaceful they deserve it. I like to think ashe is the first one to cook a special meal for dedue, one that he’s been missing for a long time, because food is always better when someone else cooks it for you.
Sigh....ashe is SUCH A GOOD BOY!!!!!!! dedue is also good but i just wish he was less willing to die for dimitri like u are not Below Him sire adfasdf.
Shamir x Catherine: they are so fundamentally different...but also....kinda sexy adklfjaldfjalkfj i remember reading about how shamir’s lover died in some battle or smth and feeling bad for her but then maybe thunderbrand catherine or cassandra cannot be bested in combat so she’s got nothing to lose there . why do ppl be having two names. Anyways i hope these two are having fun “traveling the world”
Non-romantic
Caspar x Petra: Caspar and Petra HAVE to be gym bros for life like they have to be. I also just really like both caspar and petra as characters LOL the story regarding their fathers is harrowing but i’m impressed with caspar for recognizing the significance and being transparent but sensitive towards petra about it, and i’m impressed with petra for already knowing that these things cannot be passed down through generations, though she acknowledges that it hurts her.
Bernadetta x Sylvain (and Bernadetta x Dorothea. And Bernadetta x Everyone):
Bernadetta deserves all the love and affection in the world!!! I love how so many of her support scenes have her attempting to befriend someone but then being too afraid to take it all the way, but then in general, they end up treating her kindly. After hearing about her backstory I felt so horrible for her so it is in general so lovely to see many people try to get to know her better! I wish sylvain and bernie had a platonic ending like i would have loved to see the sylvain editor bernie writer story come to fruition.
Dorothea x Anyone: Dorothea is very good at frankly assessing What Someone’s Deal Is and then calling them out on it, and just also being hella charismatic. I love her. Also romantically speaking If it weren’t for petra i would marry her myself but i know my place.
Hubert x Edelgard: i do think this is my favorite leader/2nd in command dynamic. Dedue/Dimitri are kinda weird to me (i want dedue to be more independent!) and Hilda/Claude are funny gay best friends but also she would leave claude for blue lions route so adlfkasjfd. The Hubert/Edelgard last support cutscene is kinda weird but I do love the epilogue text for them “Though it is said they spent the rest of their lives together, it is unlikely they ever gave voice to the true depth of their affections” Ohmygod unspoken tender things huh. The reason i don’t consider it to be romantic is because i’m not really into relationships where one is duty-bound to the other, even though they are all about sacrifice and complete and total trust. I wonder if i maybe just haven’t seen it executed properly (the closest to that would be...merthur LOL but they butt heads often enough that its not just blind loyalty). I prefer relationship where they’re lowkey fighting all the time but in a productive way because they love each other (ferdibert) adfadf yes im an aries yes im an entp.
Lysithea <3: i love how practical she is. Like yes bestie call everyone out on their shit and tell them to get it together! I enjoy her a lot because she is wise for her years but always makes the most of her situation...she is so cute. All the endings where she dies early i hate u. This is not a relationship i just want u all to know that she is precious to me
Shamir x Alois: ive seen ppl hate alois and like why? This dude is hilarious? I think his Dad Style humor meshes well with Shamir’s extremely deadpan personality and i love to imagine shamir visiting alois and his family every so often for dinner and it being the most awkward thing ever. Oh my god these two are great.

Unfortunately...i am not into marihilda as much as everyone else! Like they do look cute together because cotton candy but i think what i’ve seen of the support cutscenes etc is just not super compelling for me sorry though i do love both of them. Idk maybe i just need to think abt it more or smth adfadf. raphael/ignatz intrigues me but the ending is so akldjalsdfjalkfd
I’ve seen a lot of seteth/byleth shippers on tumblr and like are u all okay like what the hell is going on. I actually dont mind seteth as a person like he seems reasonable in his supports but like i didnt want him/flayn to join my team cuz theyre useless to me lol i have heard flayn/ignatz is cute n i guess i see it but i dont particularly care for it.
thesis in the defense of dimitri (that no one asked for) (literally feel free to just skip i need to talk about him):
I am trying to find out why i like dimitri so much. Like what is it about him that makes me so obsessed with him! Because when i first saw him i was like “okay this is just a blond white boy princeling” and then immediately after i was like. Dimitri you are perfect you are just you are everything. (all of u like: collective groan)
Something about me is that i am only recently starting to enjoy morally grey characters. It’s true. I’m not sure why. Ever since i was a young child i could not bear characters who were not “good” according to my definition of good (kevin has made fun of me for this so many times). I am trying to practice empathy, because i know that peoples past and history makes them the way they are for better or for worse, and not everyone is me, etc etc. but anyways that is some context.
dimitri certainly has a morally grey era, though i’m not sure that i’d call him morally grey to the same extent! in fact, what first drew me to Dimitri is that he was very polite. He was very earnest and sincere and genuinely trying to be kind in the beginning, and i liked that about him, because i like nice people! He was good! But then i saw what happened to him during the war era and while i could have expected to be like “what the hell this dude sucks now.” i realize that i actually like him more! The first reason being that i have seen him when he is at his “best” (which is a lower best than future, potential bests that occur after he has wrestled through his trauma in a productive way). The next is that i grew to understand him and his trauma and saw what he was dealing with before he entered his ~morally grey era~. So i’m able to realize, okay, i see and am able to weigh all the Dimitri Factors together and realize that he is a complex character who has gone through a lot and deserves to feel better!
To further clarify this, one quote that stands out to me a lot is from Dedue in “The King’s Triumphant Return”
Dedue: Everyone is saying His Highness is back to his old self, but I do not think that is accurate. What he was until recently is what he had been for as long as I've known him. So tortured by his compassion for the fallen that it had driven him mad. He has always been too kind to be king. He has always felt too much for the weak and the dead. That is exactly why I look up to him.
And i think that summarizes why i am SO obsessed with him, because dimitri cares so much he is tearing his own heart out. Like he is genuinely GOOD even though that manifests in violent actions/thoughts. I don’t wanna say i necessarily ~relate~ to him, but maybe i do, because there’s something to be said about caring so much/getting so lost in something that eventually you forget your roots and how you ended up there in the first place. Sometimes you feel so angry that things are the way they are that you just end up becoming someone else whether you mean to or not. Obviously still different because dimitri was also suffering from mental illness/underwent a psychotic break/the point is that he has been trying to control and deal with this for a long time but didn’t have the help he needed. I don’t think byleth was really that help, because tbh, byleth didn’t do anything themselves for dimitri (all the dialogue options are just like...Wha...Huh...) but you’re able to see the extent to which everyone around him (Gilbert/Rodrigue/even Felix to an extent) has realized okay, things need to change. But it has to be dimitri himself who works towards a better future, no matter how badly he wants to die, no matter how much he hates himself. And even though he thinks of himself as a monster/violent/awful, underneath all of that is an extremely caring person who has picked up much more than he can carry. He holds himself as the responsible party for whenever an innocent/helpless undergoes something unimaginable, and that is certainly a lot of pressure for someone to take upon themselves.
and a lot of people HATE dimitri (-_-) and i could maybe understand it (like he not just kills but murders women...)(jk i cant understand it) until i saw someone in a youtube comment be like Blue lions is ALL about him while Edelgard is trying to change history and Claude is trying to End Racism! He doesn’t do anything but be annoying and evil!
And to be honest. Um. i disagree!
Like i think you are supposed to be frustrated and mad at dimitri during the war arc! You’re supposed to see how his obsession is dragging him down, cuz he clearly can’t! And it’s not that he himself does not/did not want to change history but he is so haunted by this traumatic event he went through. He wants to change history to be better for the duscur people, to bring justice to those who slaughtered his family which ending ended up leading to genocide.
what is really a marvel to me is how he was able to change so much! Obviously he still struggles with hearing the voices of the dead/rage/etc but to be able to refocus his compassion to aim it towards the living rather than solely on the dead took a lot! That’s why he had to be annoying and “cared” for, not to “validate” the living and justify his friends and families existence, but to shift his priorities now that he’s not all on his own again like he was for 5 years. I don’t think dimitri would have been able to recognize that his outrage for the sake of the dead was useless until someone living that he cared about(rodrigue) died, to prove to him that the dead pass on but really it is the cries of the living he should be paying attention to. And like sure, do u wish it didn’t have to come to this to happen? Yeah, but it’s about his development as a character and it makes sense that it would have taken something big to bring him back to reality.
I also wouldn’t say dimitri had to be coddled or anything at all like it just took time but that is understandable right like. Come on. Also as king he moves fodlan toward communism not bad.
Anyways i love him <3 me and my eyepatch men (him and lavi from d gray man)
Conclusion
Overall, i don’t think there’s any character that i Proper Hate because i think they’re all really solid given their backstories and history. I like to hate on lorenz as a joke tho, for looking like That. but dimitri is def my favorite because i admire him for how much he’s changed and how much he wants to do for the world!
I also still need to read lysihilda grad school au wait 1,000 years for me.
I read through this so many times and know that it makes no sense but i’m too tired/not gonna have time to edit it any more. Like i wrote 8 google docs page about !!?!?! like i know the bullets are messed up but god i do not have it in me to wrangle html today. anyways.....Thank you for reading, i’m going crazy! goodbye.

Date: 2022-01-24 01:53 am (UTC)ok first of all this was so much fun to readddd thank u for having such huge brain takes<3 and we've talked abt this before but i do rly wish edelgard's route had more substance... though i do think it's interesting re:shipping bc (take this with a grain of salt bc i've only read edeleth fic not dimileth) i feel like edeleth has more substance as a pairing??? like the ~revolutionary~ partners of it all but mainly bc u need to make an Active Choice to go with edelgard which really does a lot for characterizing byleth i think.
and agree re: genderlocked classes [everyone boos] also i'm glad they made linhardt ""bi"" at least but imo he should just be straight up gay. like if you pick f!byleth you're locked out of his route. that's linhardt!!!!! also the Divinity Original Sin 2 plug lol i see you.
